First things first…
It is truly a pleasure to hold the Anthem. Unboxing this creature was somewhat like letting a serpent out of a bag. As I opened the black silky bag that contained the knife, it slid out into my hands with its own weight, and I was immediately struck by the lines of the knife’s design and character.
The Anthem is unique in many ways; it is the first ever, single piece billet titanium handled AXIS® knife. There are no liners in this knife, no spacer bar in the rear, no need for anything here except the blade, the one-piece body, the pocket clip, and the locking mechanism. It is truly simplistic in its design, and purely functional without compromise.
Looks Like A Snake, Bites Like A Snake.
It’s appearance is strikingly serpentine as well. The chevron pattern that adorns the sides of the knife body and the pocket clip creates an aggressive grip texture under any circumstance. Since the Anthem 781 is full-sized (over 8” open length), even larger hands can get 100% purchase on this knife, with all four fingers wrapped safely around the handle. The front quillon drops dramatically just before the blade, adding styling and safety.
Another unique feature of the Benchmade Anthem 781 is its blade. Featuring CMP-20CV powder metal steel for excellent edge retention and great corrosion resistance – qualities typically hard to find in a single steel. The Anthem 781 will take a fine edge and maintain it (59-61HRC). This makes it a great choice for someone looking for low maintenance and superior cutting performance. The Anthem’s 20CV drop point blade is accentuated by a subdued satin finish, complimenting the weathered bronze anodized handle.
The Benchmade AXIS® lock mechanism and the reversible pocket clip features of this knife make the Anthem 781 a fully ambidextrous tool for right or left handed users. A simple push outward on either thumb stud easily swings open the manual action thanks to stainless steel ball bearings and extremely tight machining tolerances. Release the AXIS® lock and turn your wrist, and the blade freely drops into place with gravity
The best way to appreciate this knife is to hold it yourself – it’s everything you imagine it to be, and it will last a lifetime (actually, more than a lifetime).
